More than Just Supplies
Written by Sue Badeau, ATTACh Training Coordinator and Family Advocate
Remember that old Staples ad with parents gleefully buying school supplies to the tune of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”? It painted back-to-school season as pure joy—but the reality is far more complex.
As a child, I loved the excitement of new shoes, a fresh pencil case, and seeing friends after a long break—even though school wasn’t always easy for me. First grade was rough (yes, I got F’s on my report card), and I often felt like I didn’t fit in. Still, I loved learning so much that I earned a degree in Early Childhood Development and Elementary Education.
As a teacher, the start of the school year brought new challenges and the thrill of meeting new students. Later, as a parent, it was a mix of hope and fear—hope that teachers would see the uniqueness and potential in my children, and fear that their struggles would overshadow that. For families raising children with trauma and attachment challenges, calls from school can become a daily reality.
At ATTACh, we understand these complexities. Back-to-school isn’t just about supplies—it’s about relationships, resilience, and support. That’s why we’re sharing insights on what educators need to be truly trauma-informed and trauma-responsive. This includes perspectives from principals, professors, classroom teachers, and community leaders.
